Here we have a nice listing of signs from Southern Wake County. This particular region includes such places as South Raleigh, Lake Wheeler, Swift Creek, Middle Creek, McCullers, and Willow Spring; as well as the towns of Garner, Holly Springs, and Fuquay-Varina.
Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.
| Sign | Location | Description |
| Rough Crossing sign [Just Added] | Yeargan Rd., @ Mechanical Blvd., Garner [Map] | This particular railroad crossing is notorious for casuing many an axle to either break or sustain serious enough damage. And that's when the tracks are clear. This sign does point out that particular warning in advance to keep those tempted to beat the train at bay. |
| Dual Crossroads sign | NC Hwy. 42 West @ Hilltop Rd., Willow Springs [Map] | The unusual convergence of two nearby roads necessitates the need for this design setup. It almost looks more like a giant "I" in a sense, so could this possibly be a new designation of sorts? Could be. |
| Wake Tech Bus Stop sign | Tryon Rd. @ S. Wilmington St. access road, Raleigh [Map] | When I first spotted this sign, I had a hard time figuring out which entity had put it up. Upon closer examination did I notice fragments of a school seal. After further research, it was determined that this was a designated transit stop of sorts for students attending Wake Technical Community College. Sounds a bit more far-fetched than I realized. |
| No Parking/Standing sign | Cayman Ave. @ Holly Springs Rd., Holly Springs [Map] | Obviously, the residents of this tropical-themed neighborhood don't take too kindly to people using the entrance of their peaceful streets as an overflow parking lot teeming with busy parents. Holly Springs Elementary is located nearby. |
| No Littering sign | Holly Springs Rd. @ Grassy Meadow Rd., Holly Springs [Map] | Don't even think of tossing that empty hot dog wrapper out of your car when you pass through here. It'll cost you big time if you ever get caught. |
| Kiwanis Safety sign | SE Judd Pkwy. @ N. Main St. (US 401), next to KFC; Fuquay-Varina [Map] | Nice way for a community-minded group to remind us how important it is to use our seat belts. Also have to comment on the unique landscaping that surrounds the sign as well. |
| No Commercial/Industrial Vehicles sign | Winterlochen Rd. @ Fayetteville Rd. (US 401), across from Super Kmart; Garner [Map] | This neighborhood wants to make sure that big trucks don't wind through their narrow streets, even though it is conveniently located between 70 and 401. Better safe than sorry in this case. |
| Yellow Speed Limit sign | Fayetteville St. @ Wake Chapel Rd.; Fuquay-Varina [Map] | Somehow, it seems that the yellow speed limit sign is erroneous. Either way, it compliments the other sign quite well. |
| Mailbox Drop sign | Main St. @ Ellis St., Fuquay-Varina [Map] | The mailboxes for mail drop-off and delivery downtown are tucked away behind a local bank branch, making them difficult to spot. Fortunately, these signs do the trick in helping motorists find them easily, just so they can take care of that little errand without tying up traffic on the main thoroughfare. |
| Caution text-only sign | Spring Ave. @ Sunset Dr., Fuquay-Varina [Map] | At first, I was quite puzzled over the nature of this particular sign. This could either mean that a tricky intersection is up ahead or you need to slow down. Either way, this could very well be the most over-simplified or totally vague sign out there in this area. |
| Pedestrian Crossing text-only sign | Main St. @ Spring St., Fuquay-Varina [Map] | Another simple sign warning motorists to heed caution to those crossing the street. Also worth noting is the fact that a local park nearby features the site of the old Fuquay Mineral Springs. |
| Ten-Ten/Wake Tech mileage sign | Fayetteville Rd. (US 401), next to 401 Video and Go Slow Tow; McCuller's Crossroads [Map] | The proprietor of this local business must have gotten tired of wayward motorists coming in asking how far they were from Wake Technical Community College. This sign was put up to alert those people of the distances to these local "landmarks." |
| Golf Car Crossing sign goof | Shady Greens Dr. @ Greensflag Ln., Fuquay-Varina [Map] | A prime example of how a missing letter can change the message of the sign. Don't be surprised if one of the golfers misses his or her "T" time in the process (pardon the bad pun). |
| Hidden Drive sign | Just off Fayetteville Rd. (US 401), behind Zaxby's; Garner [Map] | Shoppers might want to take heed of those people using the drive-thru, since the dumpster behind this fine eating establishment blocks their view of traffic coming to the left. |
| Railroad Crossing at T-Intersection sign | Suffolk Blvd. @ Carolina Pines Dr., Raleigh [Map] | Once you come to a complete stop, you'll need to make sure the tracks are clear before turing right. The train is not the only thing you need to be on the watch out for. |
| No Trucks sign | Pecan Dr. @ S. Wilmington St., Raleigh [Map] | This rather funky, old-style sign clearly gets the point across to those wanting to cut through this rather peaceful neighborhood. |
| Subdivision Speed Limit sign | Jamison Park Dr. @ Wesley Ridge Dr., Middle Creek [Map] | This sign is quite a departure from what we're used to seeing in most suburban neighborhoods. Notice that the speed limit on these signs are posted with rather large numbers, making them very difficult to miss. |
| Augmented Left Turn with Outlet sign | Carolina Pines Drive @ Granite Street, Raleigh [Map] | Unusual setup where the main road continues off to the left and a new ones is just straight ahead. Since this sign is located just off South Saunders Street, a green direction sign was needed to alert motorists who need to continue on Carolina Pines Drive. Granite Street, however, is a dead end. |
| Holly Springs Business Park sign | Main St. @ New Hill Rd.; Holly Springs [Map] | Nice use of what appears to be an inverted informational sign. Normally, brown would be used as more of a background color as opposed to the text as seen in this picture. |
