Northern Wake County Signs

Here we have a nice listing of signs from Northern Wake County. This particular region includes such places as North Raleigh, Falls Lake, RDU International Airport, Umstead State Park, Brier Creek, Wake Crossroads, and Wakefield, as well as the towns of Wake Forest and Rolesville.

Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.

Sign Location Description
City of Raleigh Restriction sign [Just Added] Sandy Forks Rd. @ Six Forks Rd. [Map] This sign is located on a former alignment of Sandy Forks, which used to intersect with Six Forks at a rather sharp angle. Still, the city still retains control of this little patch of land near this busy intersection. Fortunately, I stayed on the sidewalk when I captured this pic.
Private Drive with Weight Restriction sign Tanglewild Dr. @ Pinecrest Rd. [Map] The roads of this rather secluded neighborhood are so narrow that even large vehicles aren't allowed to come through at all. That might prove problematic if you happen to purchase a house here and need to get all your earthly possessions moved into it.
Black and White Adopt-A-Highway sign Six Forks Rd. @ Ramblewood Dr., just off I-440 Beltline [Map] This is not like anything close to resembling the standard-issue AAH signs that are normally issued by the state. This could possibly be an oversight of sorts.
DuBois Center sign Juniper Ave. @ Franklin St., Wake Forest [Map] These little brown signs lead to a building that once housed the only public school for African-Americans in town. This site generated controversy in early 2005 when the Wake County School Board selected it to place a temporary modular school in an effort to ease overcrowding.
Sharp Curve with Outlet sign Newton Rd. @ Harps Mill Rd., just off Falls of Neuse Rd. [Map] This sign makes note of a residental street that seems to jump out at you before you reach the stoplight located at the end of the road.
Truck Traffic sign Fox Rd. @ Spring Forest Rd., across from Body of Christ Church [Map] This sign was put in place to divert heavy truck traffic away from this heavily residential neighborhood. Wouldn't be much of a surprise, given that Fox Road serves as a back-door route to nearby Triangle Town Center mall.
Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Soccer sign Main St. (US 1-A) @ Star Rd., off US 1 next to Chris Leith Chevy; Wake Forest [Map] The sport of soccer (or futbol) might not be quite as big in the U.S. as it is in other countries. This is the only known sign in the area that commemorates a school winning a state championship in soccer, even though the event took place years ago. It's enough to make you want to scream "GGOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!"
Residential District Speed Limit sign College St. @ Juniper Ave., Wake Forest [Map] Long before the rapid growth of suburbia took over this part of the county, this particular sign popped up next to a rather tricky intersection in a peaceful neighborhood. Without a doubt, this has to be the first of its kind in the area as well, even if the wording is somewhat vague.
Falls Lake Conservation sign Six Forks Rd. @ Durham Rd. (NC Hwy. 98), Falls Lake Area [Map] Falls Lake serves as the main source for drinking water in the Capital City. These signs serve as a reminder to cut down on pollution within the watershed so that water quality won't be compromised.
Blind Pedestrian Area sign Mourning Dove Rd. @ Featherstone Dr., North Raleigh [Map] Turns out that a sight-impaired individual likes to take the occasional stroll every now and then. This sign alerts motorists and those who prefer other means of locomotion to be extra careful indeed.
Directional Blinking Red Light sign
[Left] [Right]
Rowan St. @ Pamlico Dr., North Hills neighborhood [Map] The blinking lights only come on whenever a vehicle is heading north on Pamlico, where visibility is somewhat hindered by a poor line-of-sight.
Hidden Road sign Six Forks Rd. @ Janice Rd., Falls Lake Area [Map] The entrance to this residential neighborhood is rather tricky to spot once you round the curve just up ahead. Fortunately, the additional warning sign lets the motorist know what to expect in advance.
White Square Traffic Circle sign Lumley Rd. @ Arnold Palmer Dr., Brier Creek [Map] Unlike most signs for other traffic circles or roundabouts, this one warns you of traffic on the circle as opposed to approaching it. In a way, it kind of reminds me of the movie "National Lampoon's European Vacation" when Clark Griswold tried in vain to get off of the traffic circle while in London.
Old School warning sign Wingate St. @ Sycamore St., Wake Forest [Map] This sign is indeed a throwback to the days when five-sided "schoolhouse" signs weren't quite in vogue. The fact that it somehow got "modernized" makes this warning sign combo rather quirky in its own right.
Dry Hydrant sign Averette Rd. @ Old Pearce Rd.; Rolesville [Map] There is a small pond that local volunteer fire departments use to draw water from whenever a fire breaks out nearby. Since this area is largely undeveloped and unincorporated, there are no traditional hydrants to connect to.
Augmented Right Turn sign New Falls of Neuse Blvd. @ Wakefield Pines Dr., Wakefield [Map] Originally, these two streets met on a sharp curve when there wasn't much to see around here. Today, it is a full-blown intersection complete with stoplights, a shopping center with a Food Lion at the corner, and a bunch of apartments just down the road.
West Millbrook Junior High sign Falls-of-the Neuse Rd. @ Strickland Rd.; North Raleigh [Map] This is a very old sign that for some reason or another is still in use. While the school name didn't change, its identity in a way did. Wake County Schools dropped the junior-high schtick back in the mid-1980s and now call them "middle schools" like they are today. Just another sign o' another time.
Mall Dock sign Perimeter of Triangle Town Center mall, off Sumner Blvd. @ Triangle Town Center Dr. [Map] These signs, which can be found along the perimeter of the mall, are designed to direct vehicles carrying goods and services to a specific loading dock, which service a number of stores from one particular spot. While this sign may spark a bit of curiosity to patrons of the new mall, it does help in making sure the stores have what you need for a pleasant shopping experience.
Brentwood Community Watch sign Glenridge Dr. @ Highwoods Blvd., Brentwood neighborhood [Map] This has got to be the only known private community watch program that I am aware of in the Triangle. This initiative was done in an effort to combat crime in the area by getting the residents involved.
Rectangular Children At Play sign Cashew Dr. @ Sunapee Ct., off Forestville Rd.; near Wake Crossroads [Map] This rather innocuous warning sign graces the entrance to this newly-built neighborhood being put together by the good folks of Beazer Homes.
