Vance County Signs

Here we have signs a nice collection of road signs from Vance County. It is home to Kerr Lake, which is the largest man-made body of water located east of the Mississippi River and one of the largest state parks in North Carolina. The abundance of water sports in the region make Vance County a popular tourist destination for boaters and campers alike. Also, Downtown Henderson is full of historic buildings that date back over a century, giving the Central Business District a true down-home appearance.

Sign Location Description
New Stop sign [Just added!] Stretch of Roanoke Ave. between Dabney Dr. and Beckford Dr.; Henderson [Map] These signs were put up in 2006 as a traffic calming device of sorts. Turns out this particular road had been used by locals as a cut-through of sorts to avoid the commercial district situated less than a mile away near I-85. Unfortunately, the increased traffic through the neighborhood caused problems for residents in this area, so something had to be done to curb the flow of vehicles passing through here.
Congested Hiway sign Ruin Creek Rd. @ US 158 Business, adjacent to Central Baptist Church; Henderson [Map] The church's youth ministry building is located on the opposite end of a massing parking lot from the main sanctuary. Gratned, the amount of traffic this is normally generated on a typical Sunday does warrant the need for this sign. Notice the way "highway" is spelled on this hand-made guidepost.
Cat Crossing sign Kitchen Ave. @ Garnett St. (US 1-158 Business), North Henderson [Map] I just happened to notice this particular sign since I happen to like cats and thought our furry little friends need protection from hazardous traffic as well.
Confederate Cemetery sign US 1 @ W. Main St., Kittrell [Map] These rather ubitquious signs lead to the place where 52 soldiers were buried together following their deaths at the Kittrell Springs Hotel around late 1864-early 1865.
Old Bullockville sign Bullocksville Park Rd. @ Frank Bullock Rd., near Kerr Lake [Map] This area presumably was more of a rural crossroads community long before Kerr Lake had been created. The missing "s" on this hand-painted sign is a testament to this area's early days. Nicely well-kept, I might add.
Caution Congested Area sign Charles St. @ Clark St., Henderson [Map] Rather creative way of using the common "yield" sign to address the concerns of narrow roads in this particular neighborhood.
Rusted Volunteer Fire Department sign Stewart Farm Rd. @ Carey Chapel Rd., Cokesbury community [Map] This very old sign from the Cokesbury fire district is still fairly readable, even after years of weathering the elements. If you look closely, you'll notice that Farm Bureau Insurance is the sign's sponsor.
School warning sign Rollins Ave. @ Oxford Rd., Henderson [Map] This warning sign is a rather interesting variation of the old four-sided "school" signs that were prevalent before the commonly-used "octagon" signs popped up. Nice way to get people who often cut through to slow down, especially since there is a school located within a residential area.
Road Closed warning sign Church St. @ Chestnut St., Henderson [Map] Church Street in downtown Henderson was bisected in half when the Vance County Courthouse annex was built. A walkway was also built to connect that building with another building that the county also owns.
Old Peanuts Children Playing sign Cypress Dr. @ Dabney Dr., Henderson [Map] Quite a few neighborhoods around town have these rather cool retro signs featuring the lovable Peanuts gang that were put up sometime in the 70s. Even though this particular sign is rusted out, you can make out the image of Charlie Brown and Lucy playing baseball. Also worth noting is that the sponsor of this sign has been out of business long ago.
Triple outlet sign US 158 Bypass @ Lanning Rd., Henderson [Map] Here we have a nice single outlet sign that was amended to include two more streets that enter on the same side. All three happen to be in such close contact with each other, which necessitated the additional work.
Entering City sign Ruin Creek Rd. @ Dabney Dr., behind Charles Boyd Automotive; Henderson [Map] This has to be the most subtle way of telling the motorist that you've just entered town. At one point, there was an actual city limits sign on Dabney Drive nearby, so it does make sense not to use duplicate signs so close to each other. Pretty clever idea indeed. Unfortunately, it didn't last as this sign became a casulty to progress when Ruin Creek Road was being widened in late 2003 as part of the West Henderson Bypass project.
