Meadowmont Signs

This page is dedicated to signs found in the massive Meadowmont community, which stradles the Durham-Orange county line at the eastern edge of Chapel Hill and serves as an gateway of sorts into this rather vibrant college town.

Even though Meadowmont is rather new to the Triangle scene, it is not without its own assortment of unique signage all over the place. Here for your enjoyment is a look into the interesting signs that dot this little slice of "the southern part of heaven."

This sign marks the current end of Meadowmont Lane at the northern arc of Park Bluff Drive. There is the possibility that it will link up with the proposed Southwest Durham Parkway to the north at some point in the future.

This particular sign actually leads to a nature trail located at the northern end of Meadowmont. Almost looks real enough to pass for an actual street sign.

Some of the more densely-populated areas of Meadowmont, such as condominium complexs and retirement centers, generally require motorists to drive at a more slower speed. However, the speed limit here is unusual in a sense that it isn't divisible by 5.

These temporary street sign posts serve as placeholder for when the official signage marking for these newly-named roads are put in to place. The sign to the left was taken in 2003, while the one on the right was taken more recently.

If you're looking for yet another way to get around those temporary detours, these signs come in quite handy.

Interesting how such a new-style community can go slighty retro with this old-school traffic signal signage.

If there's one thing Meadowmont has plenty of, it's those wonderful bike lanes that allow you to ride your mountain bike without having to suffer dodging other vehicles out on the roads. Strangely enough, this sign on West Barbee Chapel Road near Harris Teeter resembles more of a Regulatory sign than a typical green Bike Route sign. Not only that, you can only go in one direction! Quite frankly, how odd is THAT?!?

What's so odd about this sign is that the road is already finished, but vehicles weren't be allowed to cut through here at the time this picture was taken. The plastic barriers and giant houseplants that used to be at the intersection of Old Barn Lane at Gurnsey Trail near Meadowmont Swim Club have since been removed.

This sign is actually a lane drop or a lane transition sign, indicating a lane of traffic on the road is going down. However, there is an advisory plate below that reads "Merge." The location of the sign is at the corner of Meadowmont Lane and DuBose House Lane, right in front of the Paul J. Rizzo Conference Center. Meadowmont Lane is essentially a four-lane parkway from Meadowmont's entrance at NC Highway 54 up to where this sign is located. Two problems exist here with this particlar sign:
1) The road itself continues on for a few more blocks once you pass the conference facility, heading towards Rashkis Elementary School. Not only that, the road transitions from parkway to a typical two lane road.
2) The lane drop sign would not technically advise the motorist to merge into the left lane, as it were, unless a sign saying "Lane Ends - Merge Left" were present.
