West Durham Signs

Here we have a nice listing of signs from West Durham. This particular part of the city includes such places as Ninth Street, Watts-Hillandale, Croasdaile, and Duke Forest.

Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.

Sign Location Description
Pedestrian Flashing Light sign Academy Rd. (NC Hwy. 751) @ Wrightwood Ave., adajcent to Duke West campus [Map] With the addition of a nearby crosswalk connected to a nature/hiking/fitness trail, this sign alerts motorists of any one needing to cross the street through a flashing yellow light in the distance that is user-activated. A brillant use of promoting wellness and safety.
Temporary Traffic Signal sign Rose of Sharon Rd. @ Carver St. [Map] This sign was setup in Summer 2004 to accommodate traffic in the area that was avoiding the I-85 Work Zone. My guess is that the traffic signal will come down once the mess out on 85 is finally cleared up.
Duke Forest Roundabout sign Erwin Rd. @ NC Hwy. 751 [Map] This sign replaced a previous one with a more esoteric design in early 2004. This one alerts motorists to the flow of traffic within the circle, thus making it easier to navigate. Good thing too, since the last one had a question mark spray-painted in the middle in an effort to point out the confusion that had been brought about earlier.
Side Road on High Curve sign

Cole Mill Rd. @ Quail Ridge Rd. [Map] These signs highlight a residential street that is tucked away to the side of this busy thoroughfare. Even though there is not a sharp curve present, this street has been a difficult one to spot especially during the morning and evening commutes.
Very small Stop sign Hill Center, off Ridge Road and Pickett Road across from Durham Academy [Map] This has to be the smallest stop sign I have ever seen. The message underneath is of particular importance because of heavy traffic levels before and after each school day.
Green Duke/VA Hospital sign Hillsborough Road @ Fifteenth Street, next to Greystone Baptist Church [Map] A relic from an earlier time when this was the only way to get to the hospitals from here. This sign predates the Hillandale-Fulton connector that was built a decade ago to provide direct access to both facilities.
End City Maintenance sign Constitution Drive, approaching NC 751 This sign marks the city limits for this particular city road, even though it was extended for another 2/10 of a mile to connect with 751 for easy access to Duke University. Only known one of its kind still in use.
