Here we have a nice listing of signs from Southeastern Durham and the Research Triangle Park. This particular part of the city includes such places as RTP, Parkwood, Bethesda, Nelson, Lowes Grove, and Miami Boulevard.
Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.
| Sign | Location | Description |
| U-Turn Caution sign [Just Added] | I-40 Eastbound Exit 281 off-ramp towards Davis Drive [Map] | This sign also shows up in advance the off-ramp itself reminding the motorist of a very sharp curve ahead upon exiting the interstate. That hairpin turn is very hard to navigate, especially when trying to slow down. Something to very mindful of if your morning commute takes you there. |
| Slanted Right Lane Ends sign [Just Added] | Cornwallis Rd. @ T.W. Alexander Dr. [Map] | This sign wasn't exactly set right, as you may notice by the tilting of the word placement. A definite sign goof if ever there was one. |
| Curve with Outlet and Speed sign | So-Hi Dr. @ Ed Cook Rd. [Map] | Talk about getting all your ducks in a row. That's what this interesting sign combo has in mind as it keeps the necessary info available at a moment's notice. Good thing, too, especially when trying to manuever that rather tricky turn. |
| Speed Limit 25 Ahead sign | Sedwick Rd. @ Solitude Way, Parkwood [Map] | This rather eye-catching sign gives the motorist ample warning to slow down to a certain speed before entering this well-known residential community. Good idea too, since these folks are very picky about drivers who go beyond the limit. |
| Ellis Road Turn Right sign | Ellis Rd. @ Slateworth Dr. [Map] | This sign was put up to accomodate changes at a nearby intersection, which had Ellis Rd. make a fork to the right. The road continues on under two different names before ending at Cornwallis Rd. about a mile away. |
| R.N. Harris School sign | Cooper St., just off Bacon St. next to DTCC [Map] | When the school underwent a renovation a couple of years back, it had to relocate the main parking lot towards the back of the property. The only way to get there was through an unmarked side street abuting a parking lot located behind one of Durham Tech's buildings next door. The school's lot is only available for staff and visitors only, while busses congregate along Cooper Street in front of the school. |
| Dual Lane Drop sign | Cornwallis Rd. @ Maughan Dr., just off Durham Freeway (NC 147) next to GlaxoSmithKline; RTP [Map] | It is a rather rare occurrence to see both sides of the road get narrower, as this particular sign indicates. However, this stretch of pavement changes back from two lanes to four with a median at the next major intersection. |
| Street Intersection Obelisk sign | Clermont Rd. @ Euclid Rd., Parkwood [Map] | These particular obelisks are a throwback to the early days of Parkwood, which date back to the 1960s. The people who own the property at this particular location did a rather fair job in restoring this obelisk to its former grandeur. Looks more like they used plenty of Krylon and letter outline stencils to do the job here. |
| Old Playground sign | Revere Rd. @ Seaton Rd., Parkwood [Map] | Very simple old-school design on this number. Actually, the playground mentioned here is more of a baseball field and other facilities that the residents here use quite frequently instead of a jungle gym or teeter tooters. |
| Metric Mileage sign | Durham Freeway (Hwy. 147), between Briggs Ave. & Ellis Rd. [Map] | Only other known sign in the state that has travel distances listed in both miles and kilometers. The other sign of this nature is believed to be on I-40 somewhere in the Asheville area, thanks to a tip by Kizz. |
| Children's Crosswalk sign | Slater Rd., between Page Rd. and Emperor Blvd.; near RTP [Map] | This particular crosswalk is located next to a day care center, which makes it convenient for those who work nearby to drop off their kids in the morning and pick them up later in the day. Sure beats having to sit in the minivan listening to Raffi while stuck in slow-moving traffic. |
| Red Cross Traffic sign | Grandale Dr. @ Sedwick Rd., Parkwood [Map] | Similar to other such signs found around town at high-traffic intersections, only with a red background. |
