Here we have a nice listing of signs from North Durham. This particular part of the city includes such places as Northgate Mall, Braggtown, Eno River, Bahama, and Rougemont.
Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.
| Sign | Location | Description |
| Brown and White Do Not Litter sign [Just Added] | Club Blvd. @ Waycross Rd., just off I-85 [Map] | Much different look than the typical signs normally found along busy roads and highways. Sign can be found not far from the city's solid-waste transfer station and former dump. |
| Greater Faith Holiness Church sign | Leon St. @ Lednum St., across from Brogden Middle School [Map] | This is a classic example of what not to do when your church moves into a sanctuary somebody else vacated long ago. You could easily tell who they were, judging by the slipshod effort. |
| Parking Lane Ahead sign | Roxboro Rd. @ Maynard St, Braggtown [Map] | Strangely enough, motorists are allowed to park along the sides of this busy thoroughfare. Problem is, you wouldn't likely come across any vehicles sitting idle, since this practice is only allowed during regular business hours. |
| Eno River State Park sign | Pump Station Ln. @ Rose Of Sharon Rd. [Map] | Even though this sign fronts a newly-established subdivision, it does provide ample information on the history of this area and how the well-known state park came to be. |
| Right Turn on Roxboro Street text sign | Saint Paul St. @ Roxboro St., across from McDonald's [Map] | This sign was designed to discourage motorists from making a dangerous cut-through to get to Avondale Drive. Given the high volume of traffic and the unusual nature of this particular intersection, one shouldn't even think twice of attempting to pull off such a dangerous stunt. |
| Slanted Deer Crossing sign | Guess Rd. (NC Hwy. 157) @ Old Rd., approaching Eno River [Map] | Most conventional deer signs have the graceful animal on its tippy-toes. However, this newest rendering gives the motorist a better idea of how Bambi might act when trying to cross the road. Just hope and pray he don't hit you head on. |
| Right Turn Yield to Pedestrians text sign | Roxboro St. @ Club Blvd. [Map] | This overhead sign was one of this first in the area that alerted motorists to be cautious of those trying to cross the street when making a right turn. That is especially worth noting due to high traffic volumes that come through this area, both behind the wheel or on foot. |
| Private Road sign | Calais Dr. @ Bivins Rd., north of Willowhaven [Map] | Talk about a do-it-yourself project. Looks like somebody took and old sign, painted it white, and put a bunch of sticky lettering on it. While the sign is clear on what's not allowed, it hardly appears serious enough. A definite amateur job. |
| Governor Umstead gravesite sign | Bahama Rd. @ Hawks Nest Ln., next to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church; Mangum Township [Map] | The cemetery of the this church features the final resting place of William B. Umstead, who grew up here and was the last Governor of North Carolina to die while in office. He served less than two years at the helm before his death in 1954. |
| Narrow Road sign | Trail Wood Dr. @ Springhouse Pl., Croasdaile Farm [Map] | This clever use of an altered "narrow bridge" sign serves a purpose for a rather unusual traffic calming device. Makes it pretty hard to more than one vehicle to traverse the intentionally made bottleneck up ahead. |
| No Sunday Fishing sign | Milton Road, next to Ridgecrest Baptist Church [Map] | Clever sign put up by church members as a reminder that even the fish need to observe the Sabbath. |
| No Thru Traffic sign | Vista Del Rio @ S. Lowell Rd., Bahama [Map] | This custom-made sign makes it perfectly clear that this neighborhood doesn't want anyone to "cut through." Since this happens to be a cul-de-sac, there's hardly any reason to worry about that. Nice color scheme, though. |
| No Soliciting sign with Subdivision Speed Limit sign | Straightaway Ln. @ Roxboro Rd., Bahama [Map] | You might not be able to see this sign very well. The sign below does have a "no" mark on top of a salesman. Also, the subdivision speed limit sign is altered to accomodate the appropriate speed, despite the over-abundance of regular speed limit signs present throughout this neighborhood. |
| No Construction Traffic sign | Ben Franklin Blvd. @ E. Carver. St. [Map] | Signs like these are present at all main entrances to Independence Park, which is comprised of mostly retail, restaurants, medical facilities, and office space. Much of the construction is taking place in the back along Danube Lane. That pretty much explains why a majority of tenants here don't want construction-type equipment coming in through the front door and disrupting traffic. |
