Central Durham Signs
Here we have a nice listing of signs from Central Durham. This particular part of the city includes such places as Downtown Durham, Brightleaf Square, Lakewood, West End, Trinity Park, and Duke Park.

Also of note, I also have links to maps for each of the sites I have visited and taken pictures. If you're interested in forming a little "sign hunting trip" of your own, these maps will come quite handy. One thing to keep in mind is that the maps represent the approximate locations, so please make sure to be careful if you are driving and wish to partake in this.

Sign Location Description
School Bus Stop sign [Just Added] Taylor St. @ Driver St. [Map] These signs were used to indicate the spot that school buses were allowed to drop off their pupils. Oddly enough, the building that once housed Holton Middle School and the Durham CIS Academy has been vacant since 2003. Still, the signs do serve as a reminder of what
No Parking on Bridge sign Mangum St. @ Markham Ave. [Map] This sign was put up to discourage on-street parking on the bridge, which crosses an abandoned railroad line. The NCDOT owns both the rail line and the bridge that crosses it, so it couldn't allow the city to add any parallel parking sports on it.
Two Ton Maximum Load sign Duke St. @ Trinity Ave., adjacent to Durham School of the Arts [Map] These signs were designed to keep large trucks from using sections of Duke and Gregson Streets in order to get to I-85 and points north. Even so, traveling these streets still proves to be quite a challenge for other vehicles that cruise past Trinity Park en route to Northgate and other places.
Left-side Merge sign [NEW] Morehead Ave. @ Mangum St., just off Durham Freeway [Map] This sign was put up to accommodate traffic that turns left onto the "collector lanes" for the freeway, as well as other streets nearby. So far, this is the only one of its kind in use.
Dual Right Turn overhead sign Willard St. @ Blackwell St., adjacent to Durham Bulls Athletic Park [Map] This new sign was put up in early 2005 to handle traffic leaving events being held at either the DBAP or the American Tobacco complex.
Truck Low Clearance sign Chapel Hill St. @ Pettigrew St. [Map] Large trucks heading downtown especially need to be aware of the rather narrow clearance that these railroad bridges tend to provide. There have been more than one occasion when somebody driving a large truck would attempt to go through, only to find itself wedged into a very tight spot. Also worth noting in the background is the famous CCB tower, which changed its name in April 2005 after being bought out by SunTrust Bank.
No Thru Street sign Orange St. Mall @ Parrish St., across from City Hall [Map] These specially made signs keep motorists from cutting through this rather obscure pedestrian mall.
Hill Blocks View sign Gregson Street @ West Knox Street, Trinity Park section [Map] This sign places more emphasis on a rather tricky intersection up ahead, instead of two hidden driveways located nearby.
F-curve with Inlet sign Chapel Hill Rd. @ Bivins St., next to Lakewood Family YMCA [Map] This particular "star" intersection is quite confounding in its own right. While you could easily see two other streets straight ahead to the left, the third one on the right is easily overlooked. This sign was put up to alert motorists to be especially cautious of any activity taking place inside the bend.
Old One Way Traffic sign Duke St. @ Lakewood Ave., just off University Dr. [Map] This street, along with the Gregson St./Vickers Ave. corridor, form two one-way streets that run west of downtown. Both roads connect Forest Hills to Northgate Mall and cut through both Trinity Park and Brightleaf Square. This sign appears somewhat well-worn, although it is surprisingly legible.
Sickness Quiet Zone sign N. Roxboro St. @ Edwards St. [Map] These signs are usually set up next to residences that house those you are seriously ill or infirmed. Because of their weakened condition, they especially need even more peace and quiet.
Bus Terminal sign Morgan Avenue @ Great Jones Street, next to the Downtown Loop [Map] This sign is rather confusing, to say the least. If you turn right at the signpost, you'll end up at the city bus terminal. However, if you turn left, you could very well end up going the wrong way on the dreaded Downtown Loop. As if navigating that awful piece of asphalt wasn't bad enough ...
Durham Freeway directional sign Chapel Hill Street @ Gregson Street, approaching Durham Freeway [Map] Notice how "Chapel Hill Boulevard" is truncated. That road has since been renamed "Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard" in an attempt to avoid potential confusion amongst out-of-towners and the occasional clueless locals.
Immaculatta School sign Chapel Hill Street @ Buchanan Blvd. [Map] Somewhat of an old-fashioned sign put up at this busy intersection for the city's only parochial school.
Durham Technical Institute directional sign Holloway Street @ Alston Ave [Map] This sign dates back a good ways, since Durham Tech was re-certified as a Community College in the mid-1980s.
Side Road in Curve sign Chapel Hill Road @ Morehead Avenue, approaching Moreland Avenue [Map] Another minor intersection redux. Even though there is a four-way stop sign present at this intersection, this sign only applies to the right turn lane only that is allowed to continue unobstructed.
Dual Lane Reverse Curve sign W. Main St. @ Campus Dr., next to Domino's Pizza [Map] The lanes headed towards Brightleat Square and downtown make a rather odd shift in order to accomodate a left-turn lane for Buchanan Blvd. The lane setup continues up to the next intersection with Watts St. and Morgan St, where another left-turn lane is present. Word to the wise, please do heed caution when approaching this area and make sure you know exactly which lane you need to be in. After all, Domino's closest competitors for all those Duke students (Papa John's and Pizza Hut) are nearby.
